The second edition of the SRA represents an improvement from many perspectives with respect to the first edition. This however doesn’t mean that the SRA-1 is superseded by the SRA-2. A reader willing to have access to the whole work of ACARE still has to read both SRAs. This happens because the new edition was not designed to replace the old one, but rather to complement it.
There was indeed a rationale behind this approach: the new edition was in-fact developed with much more freedom and flexibility, without the need to constantly recall the content of the SRA-1. However, as we noted, the drawback of this choice is that if we want to properly define the totality of ACARE’s Strategic Research Agenda then we have to include both editions. This could become increasingly inconvenient with future SRA editions, all needed as “add-ons” to the previous ones.
The “SRA navigator” allows users to bridge the gap between the two current editions of the Strategic Research Agenda. The tool will translate the “language” of the first edition (challenges, goals) into that of the second edition (alternative world scenarios, HLTCs) and vice-versa.
